Port-Cros is an exceptional island: designated entirely a national park since 1963, it is France's first marine national park and one of the best preserved in Europe. No cars, no camping, no foraging — just 6.4 km² of protected wilderness. Its exceptionally rich seabed shelters thousand-year-old posidonia meadows, groupers, sea bream and octopuses gliding through crystal-clear water. The underwater trail at La Palud even lets non-divers discover the seabed on a marked snorkelling route. On land, botanical trails cross a forest of heather, myrtle and juniper fragrant with resin. A paradise for lovers of untouched nature.

Europe's first marine national park

Port-Cros is the smallest, wildest and most protected of the Îles d'Or: 6.4 km² of steep forested hills rising to 200 metres, a tiny harbour with a few dozen residents, and — since 1963 — the first national park in Europe to protect the sea as well as the land. The park was created after the island's owners gave it to the state on condition it be preserved; the whole island and a 600-metre belt of sea around it are under its rules.

Under water is the point. The Posidonia meadows, the groupers of the Gabinière islet and the underwater trail off the Plage de la Palud — a marked snorkelling route with information panels on the seabed — make this one of the best places in the Mediterranean to see what the sea looked like before overfishing. Above water, the island is a network of footpaths through holm oak and Aleppo pine, linking four old forts; the Fort de l'Estissac is open in summer with exhibitions on the park.

What Port-Cros does not have matters as much: no cars, no bicycles, no camping, no dogs, no smoking outside the port, no fishing, no picking anything. Only three beaches are open for swimming. It is the strictest island in France, and it shows in the state of the place.

May to October, for the sea

The underwater trail and the snorkelling need warm water — June to September, the sea at 22–25 °C — while the walking is best in May, June and September, before and after the heat. July and August bring day-trippers on every boat, but the island's trails absorb them quickly, and the harbour empties in the late afternoon. ⚠️ On days of high fire risk, the interior trails are closed; only the port and the nearest beach stay accessible. Check before crossing.

Come prepared — there is almost nothing to buy

Boats run from Hyères (Port Saint-Pierre) and the Tour Fondue, about an hour, and from Le Lavandou in 35 minutes, with more sailings in summer; the last boat back leaves in the late afternoon. Port-Cros is France: no formality, euro. Bring water, a hat, sturdy shoes and a picnic — the port has a few restaurants and one small shop, and nothing else on the island.

Accommodation is a single hotel, Le Manoir, and a few rooms; most people come for the day. The classic walk is the circuit from the port to the Plage de la Palud via the Fort de l'Estissac, about two hours; the Vallon de la Solitude crosses the island to the south cliffs. Mask and snorkel for the Palud trail — buoys mark the route, and the groupers are not shy.
