Ilha Grande is an island of 193 km² off Angra dos Reis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, about three hours from the capital. It has some 2,000 inhabitants, almost all in Vila do Abraão, and no roads : motor vehicles are banned. It has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 2019, jointly with the historic centre of Paraty.
An island you cross on foot or by boat
The absence of roads is not local colour: it is the rule that shapes the whole stay. You get about on a network of sixteen waymarked trails, T1 to T16, or by boat from the cais of Vila do Abraão. Allow three hours' walk to reach Lopes Mendes, the most famous beach — most visitors go out by boat and walk back.
This protection has an unexpected historical reason: for nearly a century the island served as a place of confinement, first as a quarantine station, then as a penal colony. Nobody built here. Its Atlantic forest has remained one of the best preserved on the Brazilian coast.
The flip side is a certain roughness: the distant beaches have to be earned, the weather decides the boat trips, and urban comfort stops at the landing stage.
Four landing stages, two kinds of boat
There is no airport. You arrive in Rio de Janeiro, then reach one of the four embarkation points by road, two to three hours away.
The barcas run by Barcas Rio are the cheapest — 20,50 R$ — but slow (up to 110 minutes) and one crossing a day: departure from Mangaratiba at 8 am, return from the island at 5.30 pm. The lanchas and escunas from Conceição de Jacareí leave every hour from 8 am to 6 pm and cross in 15 to 50 minutes, for 75 R$.
Conceição de Jacareí is the most flexible choice; Mangaratiba the closest to Rio; Angra dos Reis the handiest if you come from the south.
Avoid the Brazilian peak season
The climate is humid tropical. Thesouthern winter, from May to September, brings the driest weather and the most walkable trails — the best time to hike, even if the water is cooler.
From December to March, it is hot and showers are frequent; it is also the Brazilian high season, and Vila do Abraão fills up. Carnival and New Year's Eve are best avoided if you want quiet.
Everything starts from Vila do Abraão
The village holds the pousadas, the restaurants, the agencies and the boat departures. The addresses on the remote beaches — Abraãozinho, Aventureiro — can only be reached by boat, which changes the logistics of every day.
Bring closed shoes, cash for the shops that do not take cards, and a head torch: street lighting stops early. The Praia do Aventureiro requires prior authorisation from the tourist information centre.

Do you need a visa?
No for European Union nationals: tourist stays are free below 90 days, within a limit of 90 days in any 180-day period. A passport valid six months beyond the return and an onward ticket out of Brazil are required.
